Road Trip to Shelter Cove, CA

Shelter Cove is an ideal California camping destination. Located in Humboldt County, Shelter Cove is a beautiful on California's Lost Coast.

This coastline is a fairly secluded spot due to the steep terrain of the area, making it a great for a quiet vacation. The region is filled with recreational opportunities and stunning sights for visitors to enjoy while relaxing at Shelter Cove, or hiking or camping.

Much of the land in the area is part of the Kings Range National Conservation Area. The King Range National Conservation Area is one of the largest natural habitats in the country, and it is a great place to enjoy wildlife viewing. The Conservation Area extends over 64,000 acres, including over 35 miles of coastline. Visitors will find that the King Range Conservation Area is perfect for a variety of recreational activities.

Within the conservation area, King Peak rises 4,087 feet above sea level and is just three miles from the coast. Within the area there are many trails, beaches perfect for walking and tide pooling, and the natural habitat is home to many diverse species. While recreating visitors may see bald eagles, Roosevelt elk, deer, harbor seals, California sea lions, and off the coast of Shelter Cove visitors might even be lucky enough to see a migrating grey whale. These are just a few of the over 300 different species of birds and animals that can be found in the area.

This region and its abundant natural habitats make it a perfect destination for camping and hiking. There are approximately 64 miles of trails in the area around Shelter Cove. Along these trails hikers and campers can enjoy the abundant wildlife, beautiful black sand beaches. The California Coastal Trail is one great way to enjoy all that the area has to offer, while also offering campers somewhat less extreme conditions.

Shelter Cove is also an ideal spot to enjoy fishing. On the coast there are different fishing guides that ensure that visitors find the best spots and the right fish during the season. The Mattole River is also a great spot to enjoy fishing. This river is in a relatively pristine condition, as it has remained without a dam and the fish are all wild.

Also in the area are Black Sands Beach State Park, Mal Coombs Park State Park, Seal Rock Picnic Area and Abalone Point and more. In fact, at Mal Coombs State Park visitors can see the Cape Mendocino Light. This lighthouse was moved by helicopter to Mal Coombs Park, where the lighthouse can be seen today at Point Delgado. The restored lighthouse has a long history that visitors can learn while taking a tour of the building.

Another lighthouse to see in the Shelter Cove are is the Punta Gorda Lighthouse. This lighthouse is located in an extremely isolated spot, and visitors can hike along the Lost Coast Trail along beaches and beautiful coastline to reach the lighthouse. However as the hike is a relatively difficult one, visitors can instead choose to take the hour plus car trip to the Punta Gorda Lighthouse.

Visitors to Shelter Cove will have a wonderful time exploring all that the region has to offer. There is an abundance of recreational activities from exploring the beautiful tide pools with the family to whale watching, hiking, fishing and much more.
