Death Valley Road Trip

Hit the Road and Camp Death Valley National Park

Death Valley National Park is one of the truly amazing places found in the United States. It is home to the lowest, hottest and driest spot in the country. Travelers planning a road trip to Death Valley should plan the trip for the late winter or early spring, before the temperatures get too hot, January is a fantastic time to visit the park. While traveling to Death Valley from California, drivers have the opportunity to see many more amazing sights as well. Continuing into Nevada from Death Valley, Las Vegas is a good spot to end a road trip.

Starting in Fresno, California, drivers should head east through Squaw Valley. During the winter and early spring Squaw Valley is an excellent destination for skiing. Squaw Valley USA was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics and the ski area has one of the largest ski areas in the country.

As travelers continue on they can stop and enjoy the beautiful giant Sequoias at Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park. Within this park visitors will find Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the lower 48 states. Road trippers should be sure to visit the General Grant Tree in Grant Grove or the General Sherman Tree in Giant Forest. The General Sherman Tree is the largest living tree in the world. Visitors can also get tickets for the Crystal Cave Tour, hike to Redwood Canyon to see the largest grove of sequoias in the world. Other points of interest at Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park are the Tokopah Falls, the Boole Tree in Converse Basin and the Big Trees Trail.

After enjoying the amazing sights at Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park travelers continue on the road to Death Valley National Park and Las Vegas. Along the way another great spot to stop is Lake Isabella. This destination has many opportunities for recreation including fishing, hiking, boating, windsurfing and more.

When road trippers reach Death Valley National Park they will find an amazing variety of sights to see and places to explore. This park is home to the lowest, driest and hottest spot in North America, there have even been years when no rain was recorded. Death Valley National Park is also the largest National Park in the contiguous United States and has lots of deep wilderness. Despite the high temperatures and lack of water there are some truly amazing natural wonders to explore. Visitors can hike through the narrow Mosaic Canyon, view the pupfish found only at Salt Creek in the Stovepipe Wells area, see the wind eroded rock salt spires and walk under the natural bridge at the Devil's Golf Course in the Furnace Creek Area, take in the vastness of Death Valley from Dante's View, drive out to the Racetrack to see the mysterious tracks left by rocks sliding across the lakebed, and visit Badwater Basin the lowest point in North America, at an elevation of 282 feet below sea level. Death Valley National Park is filled with unique, mysterious and amazing natural wonders that are not to be missed.

After taking in all that Death Valley has to offer road trippers can continue on to Las Vegas to see all of the sights and sounds of the city. Las Vegas is filled with attractions to explore. The city has casinos, resorts and many different buildings, each with something unique to offer. Travelers can enjoy the fountains at the Bellagio, or the aquarium at Mandalay Bay, or the pyramid at the Luxor. While visiting Las Vegas travelers should be sure to take in a show and enjoy a some fine dining.

Travelers will also find a variety of great places for recreation near to Las Vegas. Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam are a must see destination. In addition the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area, which has a great scenic drive and miles of hiking trails. Valley of Fire State Park is another excellent nearby destination. It is the oldest and largest state park, and gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy the unique beauty of the Mojave Desert, and also has acres of petrified wood and Native American petroglyphs.

Throughout this amazing road trip through California and Nevada road trippers have the opportunity to see some of the most unique and beautiful places in the country. From the highest peak in the lower 48 to the lowest point in North America, this road trip has something for everyone.
