WESTERN

Low rolling mountains cover this area, providing fantastic hiking, biking, boating, and skiing. The Catoctin and Allegheny Mountains spread across the western region, peaking at Backbone Mountain (3,360 ft.) This region contains over 100,000 acres of protected wilderness, so wildlife and bird watchers will find plenty to observe. Look for hawks and black bears, or try rafting and fly-fishing on the Youghiogheny (pronounced yah-ka-gan-ee). This region is also the site of some of the Civil War’s bloodiest battles, Antietam and Gettysburg.
