OHIO

Ohio
Americana Central
What do the Wright Brothers, the Underground Railroad, President Taft, antique cars, and football all have in common? The answer: Ohio! Our 17th state pays tribute to these and countless other cross sections of Americana through many fascinating museums and historical sites.
The Aviation Heritage National Historic Park in Dayton recounts the meticulous work that led two ordinary Ohio brothers to reach their extraordinary dream of engine-powered human flight. Strongly opposed to slavery, many Ohioans harbored thousands of slaves escaping to freedom during the Civil War period. These stories of courage and hope are commemorated at Cincinnati's National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Seven U.S. presidents were born in Ohio, including Taft who is remembered at the William Howard Taft National Historic Site in Cincinnati. Take a nostalgic look at antique cars at the Classic Car Museum and celebrate football's glory days at the Pro Football Hall Of Fame, both in Canton.

As exciting as Ohio is to history buffs, nature lovers will find plenty to enjoy here, too. The entire southern portion of the state is bordered by the legendary Ohio River, and the north hugs Lake Erie, which means you'll find terrific spots for fishing, canoeing, and sailing. Ohio is home to 74 state parks, many tucked in lovely woods of oak, maple, walnut, and of course, the buckeye, the state tree. Former railroad tracks that have been converted to bicycle paths offer spectacular scenery along peaceful byways.

Visit Ohio to satisfy your hunger for cultural and historical Americana and to enjoy lovely retreat areas where you can unwind. From Cincinnati to Akron, and from Columbus to Toledo, you'll discover a wealth of history as well as natural treasures tucked away in peaceful outdoor settings.
