Hit the Road and Camp the Alabama Coast

Alabama's Gulf Coast is a fantastic road trip destination throughout the year. With warm weather, sun, beautiful beaches, plenty of history and much more, this is a destination that the whole family will enjoy. You can start your trip in the fascinating city of Mobile, the travel south to the gulf coast.

Mobile, Alabama has a long history, it is a significant part of Civil Wart history. The city only became part of the U.S. after the War of 1812 when the U.S. took the French-built Fort Cone and re-named it Fort Charlotte. Then, during the Civil War, Mobile was an important port and trading center for the South. In August 1864, the Union fleet managed to take the port, but the city held out against the troops for seven months. Visitors to Mobile can stop at many great museums and historical sites.

The city is home to a variety of historic homes, gardens, even a battleship and a World War II submarine, all of which are open for tours and visitors. At the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park you can tour the Battleship USS Alabama and the Submarine USS Drum. History buffs might also enjoy the Richards-DAR House Museum, the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion or even the Conde-Charlotte Museum House. All of these are museum houses and beautiful examples of antebellum mansions. These mansions also have delightful grounds and some are even open to hosting events.

Mobile is a great destination for a Carnival or Mardi Gras visit. The diverse cultural influences of the city make it one of Alabama's most unique cities. It's mix of Catholic, Creole, French and Spanish make for an amazing Carnival celebration. In fact, Mobile is home to the original Mardi Gras celebrations. During this time the streets of the city are filled with parades, live marching bands and mimes crowds of celebrators. If you wan't visit during the Carnival season, you can still stop at the Mobile Carnival Museum to revel in the long and rich history of Mardi Gras and Carnival in Mobile.

Visitors to Mobile will also find that there are plenty of places to enjoy the environment and nature of Mobile and the surrounding region. Canoeing, kayaking, sailing and fishing are all excellent recreational activities that travelers can enjoy. If you are looking for something a little different in your recreation you can try one of Mobile's Segway Tours or maybe take a Hot Air Balloon ride. One of the newest ways to enjoy your travels is to partake in EcoTourism an Mobile is a great destination for EcoTourism.

The south has some great opportunities for EcoTourists, especially if you are brave enough to venture into the natural habitat of alligators. In Mobile you will find places that will take you on airboat tours of the natural area, or you can enjoy the areas bird sanctuary. Where ever your interests lie, you are sure to find something that will interests you in the ecosystems around Mobile.

After spending some time enjoying all that Mobile has to offer, road trippers can travel south to Gulf Shores. Gulf Shores is located on the barrier islands, and is a lovely town. Visitors to the town can enjoy white sand beaches, warm water and more. Gulf Shores is a great destination for the family, with the children enjoying the fun of the beach activities. Children will also love the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, which is home to many animals, including tigers and kangaroos.

This is a great destination to enjoy some outdoor recreation. Gulf Shores is an especially good destination for those who are interested in saltwater fishing. There are many boating and fishing charter options. Some of these charters and cruises can take travelers to wildlife refuges and the bayous. Not only do these charters offer excellent fishing, but travelers can also enjoy the excellent views of nature. Gulf State Park is home to Lake Shelby, which is an excellent freshwater fishing in Alabama.

Alabama's Gulf Coast is filled with fun activities for the whole family to enjoy. Mobile is rich with history, including historic homes and museums. Visitors can come to experience the unique Mardi Gras events. Gulf Shores on the coast is another excellent destination, with beautiful beaches and sand. Travelers will find all sorts of excellent activities to enjoy during a road trip on the Gulf Coast.
