Explore California's Lost Coast | Take a Camping or RV Road Trip From San Francisco to Shelter Cove

California's coast is filled with amazing spots to travel. Travelers can have a wonderful time visiting San Francisco and traveling north to Shelter Cove on California's Lost Coast. The city of San Francisco is a filled with fun attractions. Along the coast, visitors will find many destinations to recreate and explore the beautiful California outdoors.

San Francisco has much to offer visitors. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most iconic images of California and the west as a whole. Every visitor to San Francisco should stop to admire the bridge for a bit, maybe even drive over it if they have the chance. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area is another fantastic San Francisco destination. Within this park is the Presidio of San Francisco, a fascinating National Historic Landmark. The Presidio of San Francisco was for many years an army post. Visitors can enjoy the architecture of the Presidio. Throughout the landmark there are many different historic sties, and more. Each of these gives a perspective into the history of the army post.

Visitors should also take a ride on the cable cars, which make travelers up the steep Nob Hill, and back down to Fisherman's Wharf. Fisherman's Wharf is also a great place to spend some time during a visit to San Francisco. The Wharf is the location of the Aquarium of the Bay as well as the marketplace and restaurants of Pier 39. From Fisherman's What visitors to the city can also catch cruises to Alcatraz Island. Of course what trip to San Francisco would be complete without the harrowing drive down the amazingly crooked Lombard Street.

After exploring San Francisco, travelers can go north along the California coast to the Point Reyes National Seashore. The National Seashore has great opportunities for backcountry camping, as well as nature and birdwatching. Visitors can see the gray whales, especially during their migration from January through April. There are seals at the Elephant Seal Overlook near Chimney Rock. Point Reyes National Seashore has many trails, historic structures and more. Another fantastic destination within the park is the Point Reyes Lighthouse, which is located about 45 minutes into the park. Visitors to the Lighthouse can walk down the path, and walk down over 300 stairs to the Lighthouse.

Continuing north, travelers can stop and explore the beautiful Shelter Cove. Located in Humboldt County, Shelter Cove is a fantastic spot on California's Lost Coast. It is a fairly secluded spot due to the steep terrain of the area, making it great for a quiet vacation. The region is filled with recreational opportunities and stunning sights.

Much of the land in the area is part of the which is one of the largest natural habitats in the country, and is a great place to enjoy wildlife viewing. Travelers can visit King Peak, which rises 4,087 feet above sea level and is just three miles from the coast. Within the area there are many trails, beaches perfect for walking and tide pooling, and the natural habitat is home to many diverse species.

Also in the area are Black Sands Beach State Park, Mal Coombs State Park, Seal Rock Picnic Area, Abalone Point and more. At Mal Coombs State Park visitors can see the Cape Mendocino Light. This lighthouse was moved by helicopter to Mal Coombs Park, where the lighthouse can be seen today at Point Delgado. The restored lighthouse has a long history that visitors can learn while taking a tour of the building.

Visitors to San Francisco and Shelter Cove will have a wonderful time exploring all that the region has to offer. There is an abundance of recreational activities, from exploring the beautiful tide pools with the family, to whale watching, hiking, fishing and much more. In addition, there are attractions throughout the region, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf and more.
