Drive Michigan's Shipwreck Coast

Michigan-Miners-Beach-Cascade-Pictured-Rocks-National-Lakeshore
Michigan offers some truly amazing opportunities to explore the shorelines of Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Throughout the state there are sandy beaches and much more. One wonderful way to explore and enjoy the scenery of the shoreline is to drive along the Shipwreck Coast.

The Shipwreck Coast lies on the shores of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This stretch of coast travels between Grand Marais and Whitefish Point. The Whitefish Point area of Lake Superior has more lost ships than any other spot in the lake. Drivers can explore this historic region by driving between Marquette and Whitefish Point.

Drivers will discover that this stretch of road is unbelievably close to the lake. This offers some amazing views of the lake and can give drivers the impression that they aren't even driving on the land. While driving this stretch of coast, visitors will find many spots to stop and explore, as well as learn about the many shipwrecks along the coast.

The starting point for this drive is Marquette. One of the must-see destinations in Marquette is the Marquette Maritime Museum. Visitors will love the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse at the museum. This is one of the region's many lighthouses and offers great views and interesting history. Visitors can learn more in the museum portion as well.

As visitors travel along the coast there are many more points of interest. Munising is another town with a lighthouse for visitors to explore. Visitors should also take advantage of the opportunity to actually see some shipwrecks on the Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours. This gives an unparalleled view into the shipwreck without actually having to dive down to the wreck.

Visitors should also reserve some time to explore the beautiful Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It was the first National Lakeshore and it preserves an amazing section of Lake Superior's shoreline. Along the preserved shoreline there are pristine sandy beaches as well as rocky cliffs and more. Sand Point and Twelvemile Beach are two points within the Lakeshore with beautiful sandy beaches. Travelers should also explore the rock formations at Chapel Rock, or the many wonderful waterfalls. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore also has a historic lighthouse, the Au Sable Light Station, and the trail to the beach offers views of the remains of shipwrecks.

Continuing along the drive, travelers should take a slight detour to visit the amazing Tahquamenon Falls State Park. This park is home to not one, but two stunning and pristine waterfalls. Visitors to this park will find a wonderful piece of undisturbed wilderness. There are miles of trails, abundant wildlife, inland lakes and much more.

This amazing drive culminates at Whitefish Point. Here visitors have to stop at the Whitefish Point Light Station and Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. The light station still works today and the museum is a wonderful destination. Within the park there is an abundance of information on many of the ships that wrecked at the point.

Michigan's Shipwreck Coast is an amazing way to explore the shoreline of Lake Superior. This section of coastline has proved especially dangerous for ships, and drivers have the opportunity to explore and learn about many historic vessels that sank along the coast. In addition visitors can also enjoy museums, wonderful towns, and amazing views of some of Michigan's most beautiful spots.
