National Park Guide | The National Mall and Memorial Park

The National Mall and Memorial is a large and wonderful complex located in Washington, DC. This land is managed by the national park system, and is some of the oldest federal parkland. Many of these sites are dedicated to past presidents and the history of the country. It is one of the most well known and premiere parks in the country. Visitors to DC should be sure to make the National Mall and Memorial parks a priority during any visit.

Within the park there are many world-class destinations. Many of these destinations are presidential sites. The Washington Monument, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial are some of the most well know parks, but there are many other fantastic destinations. Visitors will also enjoy the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial.

In addition, there are memorials dedicated to veterans and the military. Visitors can remember those that served in World War II at the World War II Memorial, or stop at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to remember those that served in that war. In addition, visitors can visit the George Washington Victory Memorial Building, the District of Columbia World  War Memorial, and the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

Each of the many memorials in the National Mall and Memorial Parks is a wonderful destination and offers visitors a chance to see into the history and lives of some of our countries most important figures. Some of the most well recognized memorials include:

Washington Monument
Located in the National Mall, the Washington Monument is one of the most prominent sights in  Washington, DC. All visitors, even if there isn’t time to explore all of the monuments in the Mall, should stop and see this national landmark created in honor of the first President. The Egyptian style obelisk stands over 555 feet tall, and is a must-see on any trip to the Nation’s Capitol. Visitors should be aware that the Washington Monument was damaged in an earthquake in August, 2011, and it is temporarily closed to assess the damage, visitors should be sure to check to see if the park has reopened when planning a visit to Washington, DC.

Thomas Jefferson Memorial
Another unit of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial commemorates the important role that Thomas Jefferson played in the founding of our country and the importance his work continues to play in our country. Visitors to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial can read some of the words written by Thomas Jefferson within the walls of the memorial. In addition, from the Memorial visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the other parks within the National Mall and Memorial Parks.

Lincoln Memorial
Visitors to the National Mall should be sure to see the Lincoln Memorial in particular, one of the great monuments in the nation. The Lincoln Memorial gives visitors a glimpse into the importance of the great president. Visitors can look upon the the marble statue of the “Great Emancipator,” and enjoy this important symbol of freedom for our country. The Memorial is open 24 hours a day, and it is a great evening destination, with the lights and more.

In addition to exploring these wonderful memorials visitors can enjoy some fun outdoor activities. The National Park System has a great historic golf course, the East Potomac Golf Course, which has three courses with golfing for people of all experience levels. Visitors can also play some tennis at the East Potomac Tennis Center. For those visitors that enjoy water recreation, taking a ire on the Tidal Basin Paddle Boats is a great option.

No matter what your interest, the National Mall and Memorial Parks has something to offer of interest. If you enjoy learning about history, the Presidential and Veterans memorials are great options to remember those that helped to make our country what it is today. Those visitors that enjoy the art of these memorials can enjoy the many sculptures and statues within the park. Visitors will also find plenty of recreation and much more within this amazing Washington DC destination.
