 | | Home of Alabama’s largest city, Birmingham, this region is an uncommon blend of natural and man-made attractions. Lakes and forests skirt the edges of Birmingham, the home of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and a center of American civil rights history. The Talladega Speedway is home to NASCAR’s Diehard 500 (April) and Winston 500 (October). On the quieter side, Talladega is also the birthplace of the Appalachians -- the Talladega National Forest is a pristine section of natural forest. | | | | | | image #1 courtesy of NPS, image #2 courtesy of Karim Shamsi-Basha - Alabama Bureau of Tourism & Travel, image #3 courtesy of Alabama Bureau of Tourism & Travel |
