Road Trip to Wisconsin's Apostle Islands and Harbor Towns

The lakeshore towns of Wisconsin are filled with wonderful destinations for travelers to enjoy. These towns each have different attractions and history. Travelers that want to explore some of these town should take a road trip, traveling between each of these towns, spending as much or as little time as desired.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Starting a road trip in the northern region of Wisconsin on Lake Superior, travelers can start at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The Apostle Islands are an archipelago, located off a large spit in western Lake Superior. The archipelago is composed of twenty-one islands, each of which is different. Madeline Island is the only island that can be reached by car. After reaching Madeline Island, visitors can spend their time exploring all of the different islands, their beaches and all of the fascinating natural features. The Madeline Island Historic Museum is a fun stop, where visitors can learn all about the fascinating history of the Apostle Islands. The Apostle Islands are a great destination for kayaking, kayaking in the archipelago is a great way to enjoy some of the amazing nature watching in the region. Bird enthusiasts will be amazed by the number and variety of species that they can see. Birds aren't the only wildlife that can be spotted in the Apostle Islands. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep an eye out for all different species inhabiting the islands, including black bears. Fishing enthusiasts will also enjoy spending time in the Apostle Islands. With great access to waterways there are plenty of opportunities to find all sorts of delicious fish.

Marinette

After exploring all that the Apostle Islands have to offer road trippers can travel south to the town of Marinette on the shore of Lake Michigan. Here visitors will find excellent fishing, excellent shopping and more. One destination visitors should be sure to stop and enjoy is the Marinette County Historical Museum, which has wonderful information about the logging industry in the area.

Oconto

Continuing south, travelers will find the town of Oconto. In this Wisconsin town visitors will find many wonderful historic structures. Visitors should be sure to take a self-guided tour of historic West Main Street to see the historic lumber mill owners' homes. In addition the Beyer Home Museum has many artifacts and other items of interest.

Green Bay

Home of the Green Bay Packers, the town is a wonderful stop on a road trip for sports fans. throughout the year the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame is a great destination. Green Bay also has plenty of history and museums, including the National Railroad Museum, the Oneida Nation Museum and more.

Sturgeon Bay

Visitors to this town can learn all about the shipbuilding history of this town. In addition travelers can still see how boats are made. Sturgeon Bay also has a nice downtown for people to explore. Visitors to this town will also have great access to all the attractions and destinations of Door County.

Manitowoc

This fantastic Wisconsin town is filled with maritime history. Visitors to Manitowoc have to visit the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, which as exhibits on shipbuilding, wooden sailing ships, and even a World War II submarine. In addition visitors to Manitowoc can also take a cruise between Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan on the S.S. Badger.

Milwaukee

After exploring many small towns along the shore of Lake Michigan, visitors can stop in the state's largest city, Milwaukee. This city has many cultural and arts attractions. Visitors can go see some live performances, including the symphony, ballet and more. Visitors can also stop at the Milwaukee Art Museum to see their many exhibits, including a great collection of Georgia O'Keefe's work.

Kenosha

At the southern end of Wisconsin, visitors can end their trip in Kenosha. Visitors to Kenosha can see some real mammoth bones at the Kenosha Public Museum, as well as art and more. Another must see destination in Kenosha is the Jelly Belly Center, where visitors can learn all about Jelly Beans on the Jelly Belly Express.
