Virginia | Tidewater and Hampton Road

The Tidewater and Hampton Road region of Virginia is a fantastic region of the state. Visitors will find plenty of interesting activities. From historic destinations to theme parks, this Virginia camping gem has a little bit of everything.

 

Bacon's Castle

Built in 1665, this castle is a fascinating Virginia destination. Visitors can enjoy the Jacobean architecture style, which is now a rare site in the country. Over time the house was owned by many different people, but today it is open to the public. Visitors can tour the house and enjoy the architecture, while also enjoying some of the artifacts and furniture from the early years of the house.

Busch Gardens

This park is an excellent theme park option for families in the Tidewater and Hampton Road region of Virginia. Busch Gardens has fun rides for children and adults. Some of the rides are tame and others provide top rated thrills. The park is also known for its beautiful grounds.

Colonial Williamsburg

Colonial Williamsburg is an amazing living history museum in the historic town of Williamsburg. There are over 30 sites, as well as shops and tours. Visitors can enjoy learning all about the colonial era in Williamsburg.

Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center

The Jamestown Settlement was one of the first European settlements in what is now the United States. This settlement was started before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts. Today the site of the settlement gives visitors a look back into the history of the settlement, including the stories of the people who founded the settlement and the Native Americans that the settlers encountered. At the Jamestown Settlement visitors can enjoy a short film, gallery exhibits, as well as outdoor exhibits including replicas of the ships that sailed from England, recreations of the colonists fort as well as a recreation of a Powhatan village. Just a few miles away from this early settlement is the site that represented the end of the Revolutionary War and America's independence. The Yorktown Victory Center is a museum about the American Revolution, located on the site of the Siege of Yorktown. Visitors can enjoy the exhibits which have information about the war and the Siege of Yorktown. In addition the site has a recreated Army encampment, with interpreters describing the lives of the soldiers, there is also a recreated historic farm and much more.

The Mariner's Museum

This museum is one of the largest maritime museums in the world. Visitors can explore the many exhibits within the museum, which include figureheads, model ships, artifacts from the Civil War and an ironclad, and more. One of the museum's fascinating exhibits is the USS Monitor Center, which is an exhibit all about the Civil War ironclad known as the USS Monitor. Other exhibits at the museum have paintings, and information on the history of the region and much more.

Nauticus

Children and adults alike will love exploring Nauticus and the world's oceans. Throughout the facility there are many permanent and changing exhibits. One of the fascinating exhibits is the Battleship Wisconsin, one of the last battleships built by the U.S. Navy. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the deck. Other exhibits include information on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Sanctuaries, which are underwater parks, information on Virginia's seaports, information on tsunami's and much more.

Norfolk Botanical Garden

Visitors to Virginia that would like to enjoy some outdoor beauty can walk through these botanical gardens. Throughout the year there are plants of interest at these gardens. One of the very best times to visit the botanical gardens is in spring when the majority of the flowers are in bloom. Visitors can even take a tour of the gardens on a tram or on a boat. Visitors will love the many different gardens, including a rose garden, Japanese garden and much more.

Water Country USA

This is Virginia's largest water park, with over 30 rides. Adults and children will love the whitewater rafting rides, as well as the tube rides. For those that enjoy speed there are fast slides, and for those that want a little slower pace can enjoy the wave pool and much more.
