Mystic, Connecticut | Beaches, Aquariums & Maritime History

Mystic is a delightful town with many attractions to delight. Visitors can enjoy exploring the town, spending time shopping and even learning about the maritime history of the country. Southern Connecticut has miles of beaches and excitement.  The region is filled with beauty and is great for nature watching as well as outdoor recreation. No matter what interests visitors have, they are sure to find something to enjoy during a visit to Mystic.

The Museum of America and the Sea

One of Mystic's real treasures is the Mystic Seaport -- The Museum of America and the Sea. This is one of the nation's leading maritime museums. Visitors to the museum can explore historic ships, view stars in the planetarium, watch demonstrations of maritime trades and even see the working preservation shipyard.

Yale University Art Gallery

For more art and culture visit the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven. Yale University offers an amazing collection of art from around the world including pieces by Picasso and Manet.

Essex Steam Train and Riverboat

For the visitors to Connecticut that want to enjoy the scenery, the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat is a great way to see the country in Connecticut. It is the only steam train and riverboat connection in the country. Passengers start their journey at the Essex Station, and board the vintage cars and authentic steam locomotive and enjoy a narrated trip to the Connecticut River. At Deep River Landing, passengers are taken to the Becky Thatcher Riverboat. Passengers on the riverboat enjoy a cruise along the Connecticut River, where they can see Gillette Castle and the Goodspeed Opera House. The riverboat then returns to Deep River Landing where passengers return to the train for their trip back to Essex Station.

Olde Mistick Village

Visitors that enjoy shopping can spend some time at Olde Mistick Village. This is an open-air market, and visitors can enjoy exploring the over 40 stores within the market, which have gifts and much more. Another fantastic feature of the market is it's architecture. The entire market is designed to resemble a Colonial village and has a duck pond, a waterwheel, brick pathways, Victorian gazebo and much more.

Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration

The Aquarium and Institute for Exploration is a great spot to enjoy a close look at aquatic life, including rays, sea lions and even penguins. In addition, the Mystic Aquarium has a fascinating exhibit on the Titanic. The exhibit has an iceberg that is actually cold, as well as other information about the Titanic and the technology that helped lead to the discover of the technology.

Connecticut Wine Trail

Throughout the state of Connecticut has over 24 wineries, and visitors to Mystic, Connecticut can spend some time exploring some of these wineries. One of the wineries near Mystic is the Jonathan Edwards Winery. The winery has some delicious wines for visitors to try, while enjoying the lovely setting. This winery makes wines in both California and Connecticut, so visitors have the opportunity to try wines made in both regions while visiting the Connecticut location.
