The West

THE WEST

North Dakota
THE WEST

Begin your voyage through the prairies with a stop at one of the two sections of Theodore Roosevelt National Park (north and south). Explore the grasslands, watching for wildlife such as bison, pronghorn antelope, elk, white-tailed deer, mule deer, and bighorn sheep. See Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch on the Little Missouri River and view the tablelands and colorful hills of this region’s badlands. Further north, visit the site of a crucial fur-trading site at the Fort Union Trading Post. Between 1828 and 1867, the Assiniboine, Crow, Cree, Ojibway, Blackfeet, Hidatsa, and other tribes traded furs here for imported goods such as knives, blankets, and beads. Lewis and Clark State Park, along the banks of Lake Sakakawea, contains rugged buttes and excellent fishing (walleye, sauger, and northern pike). In the region’s southwest corner, visit White Butte, the state’s highest point (3,506 ft.)
