The must-see in this region is Crater Lake. Created by the eruption and subsequent collapse of a volcano some 7,000 years ago, this deep-blue lake surrounded by a volcanic caldera is a unique natural wonder that elicits "oohs" and "ahs" from those fortunate enough to see it. Nearby cities and towns offer a taste of culture in a casual setting. Ashland hosts the renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival with plays and events held throughout the year.
